Bay Ridge
One of the 100 most influential people in U.S. defense donated a million dollars to Xaverian High School because he has great memories of his alma mater.
Michael Strianese (Class of ’74) — chairman, president and C.E.O. of L-3, a global aerospace and national security company — made the donation to support Xaverian’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math program.
The program, established last year through a partnership with Project Lead the Way, will be named the Michael T. Strianese ’74 STEM Program at Xaverian.
“This is an extraordinary time in Xaverian’s history,” said Xaverian president Robert Alesi, adding Xaverian’s roots have always been strongly grounded in science and mathematics education. “With this remarkable gift Xaverian is moving forward by offering a 21st century science and math curriculum.”
Generous grad Michael said he made the donation because the Bay Ridge school has been instrumental to his success.
“Xaverian gave me the academic foundation and experience that prepared me for leadership roles throughout my career,” he said.
Now Michael is on the top 10 Standing O list for a really good deed.

Fort Greene & Carroll Gardens
Legal eagles
Good wishes to attorneys Sarah Levin of Carroll Gardens and Christopher Strong of Fort Greene. The excellent esquires were recognized by the New York State Bar Association and awarded the 2014 President’s Pro Bono Service Award for volunteering to represent residents who have had false claims of child abuse or neglect brought against them.
The pair was among 18 other battling barristers recognized across the state.
“Pro bono service is one of the proudest traditions of the legal profession,” said David Schraver, president of the state bar association.
Shouting out Standing Os is a proud tradition of the journalism profession, too!
Sunset Park
Walking for the cure
Thanks to the Lutheran Family Health Center network, whose big-hearted members walked six miles through Central Park and the Upper West Side of Manhattan on May 18 to raise funds and awareness for HIV and Aids.
The team of 238 walkers raised more than $5,000 for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and more than 40 other related service organizations.
