And another one bites the dust! SyFy channel said goodbye to another of my favorite shows last week when “Warehouse 13” closed its doors to the factory of freaky finds and all its agents, keepers, and regents.
The show, which premiered in 2009 was one of the original SyFi Original series (along with “Eureka” and still-running“Haven”), that successfully blended true sci-fi adventure with humor and tongue-in-cheek episodes week after week.
The entire cast, from Artie Nielsen down to the last agent to be added, Steve Jinks, admirably played by Aaron Ashmore, made each character believable.
Nielsen, excellently acted by character actor Saul Rubinek, was the quintessential father figure. Joanne Kelly gave agent Myka Bering just the right amount of sexiness and smartness. Eddie McClintock as Pete Lattimer was a terrific mix of funny, macho, and not-as-dumb-as-you-wanted-him-to-be, and Allison Scagliotti portrayed Claudia Donovan excellently as the ersatz daughter figure to Nielsen.
Additional cast members included Genelle Williams as empath Lena, who left far too soon, Jame Murray as H.G. Wells (surprise, surprise — in true “Wharehouse 13” fashion — he was a she) and C.C.H. Pounder as “now-she’s-here-an-now-she’s-not” Irene Frederic completed the rotation of guests that came and went.
The ending provided enough closure for all characters to be satisfying, and left no opportunity for a reunion movie down the road — which is just as well, because sometimes you just can’t go home again.
The cancellation of SyFy’s “Warehouse 13” leaves a giant hole in my Monday night television viewing.
However, there is always a silver lining in every dark cloud and mine is the new series I’ve become addicted to on Monday nights — The BBC program “Death in Paradise,” on PBS. The hour-long mystery showcases the unorthodox talents of sloppy sleuth Humphrey Goodman who channels the spirit of Columbo, sans rain-coat, by solving murders most foul on the fictional Caribbean island of St. Marie. British actor Kris Marshall gives enough credibility to his absentminded portrayal of Senior Detective Goodman, as Peter Falk gave to Columbo.
Not for Nuthin,™ even though I had to say goodbye to the gang at “Warehouse 13” - I’m saying hidey-ho to “Death in Paradise.” Follow me on Twitter @JDelBuono.
