Barbells for Boobs — a weightlifting contest at Aviator Sports and Events Center on Oct. 11 to raise money for mammogram screenings — was all about raising the bar on the survival rate for people with breast cancer.

Fitness fanatics fiercely fund-raised, and one contestant who participated with his Cross Fit club said his team is very, very supportive of early detection screenings.

“We love the tatas as much as everyone,” said Brian Eidens, who lives in Long Island and has participated in Barbells for Boobs events before. “We decided to do it all together at Aviator this year.”

Barbells for Boobs — the organization that gave the event its name — focuses on the early detection of breast cancer, particularly for women and men under 40 years old. Each $80 donation participants raised will cover the cost of a mammogram for individuals not eligible for free screenings from their family doctors. Early detection is the key to surviving breast cancer, and regular screenings are essential for overall health, said one participant.

“They’re trying to raise money for underinsured and uninsured men and women,” said Ginny Jager, who lives in Long Island. “It is very important for overall health to have screenings for everything.”

And even though the event is over, Jager said the participants are still in contest-mode.

“We have until the end of the month to raise that money,” she said.
