Sometimes the best part about being dirty is getting clean.

The 5K Foam Fest — a race with more than three miles of obstacles, mud, and of course, foam — on June 21 at Aviator Sports and Events Center mixed soil with suds. The race, starting a new heat of runners every 10 minutes from 8 am until 2:30 pm, gave all ages 10 and up a chance to get dirty — then clean.

The obstacles, more than 15 challenges ranging from adult inflatables to mud pits and slippery, sudsy foam to cargo net climbing, weren’t just for experienced athletes.

“You didn’t have to be fit,” said Jay Harris, from team Duro — a Spanish word meaning hard and connoting tough — whose favorite obstacle was the rope climbing. “They had obstacles that everyone could do.”

The young ones not old enough to participate could have some end line entertainment, playing at on-site activities or watching the adults — some in matching team shirts or color-coordinated costumes — act like kids on the course.

One participant’s favorite part was the end — not because it was over — but because that meant slipping her way down a huge slide.

“The height — it was exciting,” said Odilis Almanzar, who attended the event with friends. “Just to go down the slide.”
