Music needs movement!

The annual Memory Day event at PS 207’s Early Childhood Center combined school skills like listening with dancing, shaking up the ordinarily sedentary school year. The dances took place on June 19 — one of the last events of the school year — at the Flatlands Avenue school, and are a leap towards summer.

“The children are sitting at their desks,” said Vella Cherkas, the music teacher at PS 207. “I want them to get moving.”

The kids moved throughout the morning, dancing the tango, cha cha, and the waltz. Donning ties and dresses and performing to popular movies soundtracks, like “Anastasia,” the kids shimmied in star style.

“They felt like they were in a fairy tale,” said Carmen Cruz, the mother of Lisa, Melissa, and Grace Cruz.

The music class focused on listening, moving, and dancing.

The school has had other performances similar to this but Cherkas felt that these dances — though challenging — are especially rewarding.

“You have to get the movement and the melody,” said Cherkas. “It’s not easy but they like it.”
