Safety first means fun for kids and parents.
The second annual safety day, hosted by Magenu — a Brooklyn-based non-profit focusing on increasing personal safety and awareness for kids — sounded the alarm for excitement by featuring the police and fire departments, Hatzala, Shomrin and other emergency medical services and safety organizations to promote information about Magenu’s resources and the importance of safety on June 15 at Floyd Bennet Field in the Gateway National Recreation Area.
“This event is to raise the profile of our organization and increase awareness to thousands of students across the country for personal safety,” said Shani Verschleiser, the co-founder of Magenu.
Magenu, which spreads safety around with in-service training to parents, staff, and students at Hebrew schools and Yeshivas, expects to expand on a national level, implementing curriculums for 250 schools by 2015.
“We are so thrilled and humbled by Magenu’s growth in terms of school participation, parents, and volunteers who have come forward,” said Verschleiser.
Open to the public, the event had live music, games, and all of the kids’ favorite foods.
“Of course he liked the junk food,” said Marissa Siegel, mother of Ari who enjoyed the popcorn and the bounce house.
And older kids enjoyed it just as much as the younger ones.
“He liked all the stuff going on — the fire engine, the police motorcycle,” said Leah Levin of her 13-year-old son Yona’s experience. “He likes lights and sirens.”
Fans of safety lights — of all ages — left the event with smiles just as bright.
