Williamsport Crosscutters 5

Cyclones 4

July 5 at MCU Park

A controversial call at the plate in the seventh let the Crosscutters score the crucial run that snapped the Cyclones’ six-game winning streak.

A throwing error in the bottom of the third inning by Crosscutters third baseman Mitch Walding let Mini-Mets right fielder Jonathan Clark cross the plate, but Walding made up for his mistake by evening the score with an RBI single at the top of the fourth. A three-run dinger off the bat of Williamsport designated hitter Christopher Serritella gave the Crosscutters the lead, which they held onto for the rest of the game.

The Clones attempted a rally in the sixth with an RBI double from first baseman Cole Frenzel and a broken-bat single from left fielder Stefan Sabol, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games and sent Frenzel home.

But with a runner on second in the top of the seventh, Crosscutters left fielder Larry Greene hit one up the middle to Clones center fielder Brandon Nimmo. The top Mets prospect hurled the ball to Clones catcher Jeffrey Glenn — but it wasn’t in time, according to umpire Matt Moore, who declared the Williamsport runner safe over the loud protests of nearly everybody in the stands.

Cyclones second baseman Juan Carlos Gamboa hit a solo homer — his first of the year — after the stretch, but it was too little too late. The Cyclones went down in order in the eighth, and Glenn flied out in the ninth while Crosscutters closer Jab Stefan fanned Gamboa and Nimmo to end the game.

Clones starter Rainy Lara struck out nine and walked none in his first loss of the season, giving up nine hits and four runs including Serritella’s homer before being replaced by Beck Wheeler in the sixth inning. Lara is now 2–1 with a .233 ERA.

The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] tonight at 7 pm as they take on the Williamsport Crosscutters.
