July 6 at MCU Park
The Cyclones grabbed an extra-innings victory against the Williamsport Crosscutters on a walk given up by Crosscutters closer James Birmingham — a poor showing in a game punctuated with wild pitches.
The Clones took an early lead in the first frame with a powerful line drive from center fielder Brandon Nimmo that brought second baseman Richie Rodriguez home. A throwing error by Mini-Phillies shortstop Roman Quinn in the second allowed Cyclone Stefan Sabol reach base — inadvertently breaking the left fielder’s 11 game hitting streak. Two wild pitches from starter Luis Gonzalez brought Sabol across the plate. Mini-Mets designated hitter Kevin Plawecki ran home moments later on a botched play by Crosscutter catcher Chace Numata, who lost control of a Gonzalez throw.
The Crosscutters evened everything up in the fourth before racking up three more runs in the fifth on the strength of an RBI triple from Quinn — who scored on a wild pitch thrown by Clones starter Gabriel Ynoa — and a solo shot homer off the bat of first baseman Christopher Serritella.
The Cyclones turned in a three-run inning of their own in the seventh with a belt by first baseman Jayce Boyd that drove in Plawecki. A wild pitch by Crosscutters reliever Nicholas Hanson allowed Clones right fielder Eudy Pina to reach third, and Pina tied the game on an RBI single from Nimmo.
In the bottom of the 11th, Birmingham gave up a single to Plawecki, who Clones skipper Rich Donnelly immediately switched for pinch runner Jonathan Clark.
But Birmingham couldn’t find the strike zone as the nail-biting inning continued: the lefty from New Jersey threw a wild pitch to Cyclones catcher Nelfi Zapata that let Clark take second, then walked Zapata. Birmingham threw another wild pitch to Pina that helped everyone move up, then intentionally walked Pina to face Rodriguez. Birmingham then walked Rodriguez, driving in Clark and ending the game.
Nimmo now has 11 RBIs on the season.
The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] tonight at 6 pm as they take on the Jamestown Jammers.
