It’s more than just a changing of the guard — it’s a changing of the times.
Brooklyn’s only military base celebrated the change of command in one of the borough’s two recruiting companies with a traditional ceremony on Nov. 7 — putting the battalion in the hands of an all-female leadership team for the first time in more than five years.
Captain Stephen Gerry turned his command of Army Recruiting Company Brooklyn North over to Captain Mia Mayers with a ritual of passing flags at Fort Hamilton Army Garrison.
Gerry, a New Hampshire native, is headed for the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., to study for a Masters degree in Business Administration. The Barbados-born Mayers — along with First Sergeant Beverly Flores — will oversee the Army’s enlistment activity in the northern half of Kings County.
Both Gerry and Mayers are decorated veterans of the ongoing operation in Afghanistan, with Mayers earning the appointment of deputy chief of staff in Kabul. Mayers also served during the Kosovo conflict.
