Hundreds of Brooklynites flocked to Park Slope’s annual Fifth Avenue Fair Sunday despite the stormy weather.

Food vendors, merchants and business owners lined the 19-blocks from Sterling Place to 12th Street for the all-day street fair sponsored by the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District. The event featured antique cars parked on Garfield Place, arts and crafts, a puppet show, rides, fun-filled family activities and live music.

“It wasn’t as good as years past because the sun didn’t shine, but we made the most of a wet day,” said Gowanus resident Sabine Aronowsky, who has attended the fair for years. “It’s a great community, cultural affair.”

Faux French pop-rock band Les Sans Culottes was one of the many musical groups to perform in the heavy downpour.

“We had a great time playing despite the rain,” said the Culottes frontman Bill Carney, adding that he has attended the street fair the past five years. However, this was first time his band played at the crowd-pleasing event.

“A number of people stuck around for our entire set despite the less than perfect weather,” said Carney, who sings the bands retro songs in a fake French accent. “They were smart enough to bring an umbrella.”

For longtime neighbors, the nostalgic street festival is one not to miss.

“It is a tradition for me to walk through the avenue and visit familiar vendors and check out new ones,” said Park Slope native Marissa Marucci. She made sure to get her favorite street fair eats – a sausage-and-pepper hero and zepploes.

“As a young girl walking through the fair, getting my annual silly string and plastic ninja sword was the highlight of my day,” she said. “Now I look forward to the sausage sandwiches, street corn, and the unending flow of beers and margaritas.”
