Young students and service men and women at Fort Hamilton Army Garrison Base in Bay Ridge paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by marching throughout the grounds on Jan. 17.

Army personnel — including Wanda Mills, retirement service officer and Specialist Sergio Lemus — as well as civilians, marched around the base, led by Specialist Vishaul Persuad, Staff Sgt. Faheem Blount, and Sgt. Aggrey Benn, carrying a commemorative banner.

The procession made several stops on the base, including at the base’s Child Development Center pre-K class, where the children honored Dr. King’s memory by reciting the famous “I Have a Dream Speech,” which was given in Washington in 1963.

The third Monday in January was set aside to remember and celebrate the life and achievements of the father of the Civil Rights movement, in 1986. The activist was born on Jan. 15, 1929 and was assassinated on April 4, 1968. — Joanna DelBuono
