The following are some of my thoughts as I reflect on the year that passed.
The best entertainer of the year, and for several years past, is Michael Buble. The fantastic singer is a combination of the talents of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett all rolled in one and as the years pass, he gets better and better.
The most overrated flick of the year: “The Master.” Even with great reviews, 250 of us left the theatre with our palms up, shrugging shoulders asking the same question — “What was that about?”
The best movie of the year is an easy one: “Flight.” Yep, Denzel did it again. Have you ever seen a Denzel flick that you didn’t like?
My best read of the year: “Killing Kennedy.” It’s still very high on the best-seller list and like O’Reilly’s “Killing Lincoln”, will be there for a loooong time. Many of you hate the author so much that you refuse to read it. That’s your loss.
The very best sights of the year were the TV clips that showed our heroes in the military surprising their children when they returned even if their return was only for a few days. Tears of happiness rolled down everyone’s cheeks.
The liar of the year is still the receptionist at my physician’s office. I show up at 9:45 for my 10 o’clock appointment, and usually wait until 10:30 to ask what’s happening. The reply is always the same: “Oh, the doctor had an emergency this morning and is running behind.”
Why does he always have an emergency on the days of my appointments? I believe he is purposely overbooking so that he can always be running late and never have non-productive time.
My saddest moment of the year was when I learned about the passing of Andy Williams. I’ve been a fan of his since the regular appearances on the old Steve Allen Tonight Show last century. Several years ago we trekked to Branson and saw his mega-marvelous show at the Moon River Theatre.
The biggest idiots of this year and every year are the fools that text while driving.
2012 will always be remembered as the year that Brooklyn, once again, became the home of a professional sports franchise. When the Dodgers abandoned me in 1957, I wept. A Jersey NBA team now calls Brooklyn home. After years of rooting against them, the Nets are now our home team. Yay! We can also look forward to a Brooklyn hockey team.
What law would you like to see passed that would have prevented the Newtown tragedy? This sad situation has revived the best bumper sticker of 2012. “When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.” I truly understand and support the arguments about the semi-automatics, but I am very much in favor of keeping handguns legal. I have a license to carry my .38 and once had to use it to save a life — mine.
There are two “Best Days of 2012.” In second place is Dec. 22. On that morning we woke up to find that the world did not end on the 21st. Whew. That was a close one.
The best day of 2012 was Oct. 30. On that date our eighth grandchild Jacob Gershbein was born, and he is as beautiful as Carol, his grandmother. I am StanGershbein@Bellsouth.net counting my blessings and wishing all of you a happy, healthy, prosperous and safe New Year.
