Talk about going down to the wire!
New Utrecht senior soccer star Grei Mujok kicked in the winning goal in the 78th minute to help the Utes snag a 3–2 victory over the Newtown Pioneers at Randall’s Island on Saturday night — and take the Public School Athletic League Class B boys soccer final.
The Utes had just given up a tying goal 30 seconds earlier. Off the restart, Mujok scooped up an errant Newtown pass and dribbled past defenders down the right side before burying a shot in the back of the net for the winner.
“Please score, please score, that’s all I had in mind,” Mujok said. “It’s the best feeling ever.”
Mujok was the last and the first person to score on Saturday: in the 15th minute, he rocketed the ball into the lower right corner to give the Utes a 1–0 lead. More back-and-forth action led to an equalizer from Newtown’s Brian Paredes off a header.
A penalty kick goal by New Utrecht (16–1) in the 61st minute gave the Utes a safe lead until that fateful 78th minute when Newtown senior Juan Valencia sent the crowd into a frenzy with the tying goal off a free kick to bring the Pioneers (17–2) even at 2–2.
This is the third straight year that New Utrecht has taken home the division title, but even team leaders weren’t sure where Saturday’s game was going to go until Mujok struck.
“I was hoping we would come back,” coach Brian Donohue said. “Sometimes these things go into overtime, but luckily we were able to have it go in our favor.”
