The bottom-feeding Aberdeen IronBirds kept the Cyclones off the scoreboard, knocking Brooklyn down to second place in the division in a shutout at home.
The IronBirds capitalized on the three hits and four walks Mini-Mets starter Julian Hilario allowed over six innings, putting up their first run in the fourth after first baseman Christian Walker picked up a single and designated hitter Torsten Boss whacked a line drive to center that brought him home. Walker also scored the team’s second run after drawing a walk to open the sixth and advancing to third on another line drive from Boss, then touching the plate on a sac fly off the bat of left fielder Will Howard.
The Cyclones offense failed to deliver, only coming close to scoring once in the entire game when IronBirds hurler Sebastian Vader loaded the bases with just one away. Vader gave up singles to Brooklyn designated hitter Alexander Sanchez and first baseman Jayce Boyd, then walked catcher Jeffrey Glenn. But Clones center fielder Brandon Nimmo chopped a grounder into a 4–6–3 double play, ending the inning.
Hilario is 0–3 for the season with an ERA of 3.60.
The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] today at 11 am as they take on the Aberdeen IronBirds.
