Brooklyn Daily

The Republicans are trying to get a foothold in Coney Island — and they’re looking to step over Coney Island incumbent Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny to do it.

Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny vs. Tom McCarthy

McCarthy, a Bay Ridge native, is fighting an uphill battle to unseat three-term Coney Island incumbent Assemblyman Brook-Krasny.

Alec Brook-Krasny

• Emigre from the former Soviet Union. Former small business owner.

• First elected to office in 2006, representing Coney Island, Seagate, Brighton Beach, and parts of Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights.

• Age 54, married. Three children.

Tom McCarthy

• Vice President of Treasury Services at J.P. Morgan Chase.

• Treasurer of the Kings County Republican Party. Former Community Board 10 member.

• Age 58, married. Three children.

The campaign

• Brook-Krasny argues that as a member of the Democratic majority, he’ll be able to bring more money back the district than McCarthy would.

• McCarthy claims Brook-Krasny “sold his soul” to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D–Manhattan) and has supported an agenda that has driven jobs and businesses out of New York State.

• Political wachdogs claim Brook-Krasny won’t complete his next term and step down in 2013 to run for the open council seat left behind by term-limited Councilman Domenic Recchia (D–Coney Island) — a rumor Brook-Krasny has done nothing to dispel.

• Brook-Krasny has $82,000 in the bank, compared to McCarthy’s $ 25,200.
