It is television time again and, as you are all aware, many of my top shows have come to their natural end leaving my viewing options vastly depleted.
However, like all dark clouds, this too has passed and there are new choices on the horizon to occupy my boob-tube time.
“Rizzoli and Isles” on TNT has returned for another season, giving my DVR a workout on Tuesday evenings. The show, based on the novels by Tess Gerritsen, stars Angie Harmon as Det. Jane Rizzoli and Sasha Alexander as Dr. Maura Isles, medical examiner. It is a fast-paced crime drama with just the right amount of humor to keep it light — the show offers a new crime to be solved each week by the very talented pair, who use good-old-fashioned deductive reasoning and interesting trivia to figure out whodunit and catch the bad guys.
Also on TNT (following the crime-busting duo) is “Perception” starring Eric McCormack of “Will and Grace” fame. The character of Dr. Daniel Pierce is a schizophrenic neuropsychiatrist who assists the FBI in solving murders most foul. I must admit when it first premiered in 2012 I really didn’t fancy it much, but it has since grown on me, and I find myself recording it as well.
The Syfy Channel, in filling the gap left by “Warehouse 13,” premiered “The Almighty Johnsons” on July 11, so I gave it a glance. I figured if the little channel that produced “Eureka” bought the New Zealand series, how bad can it be? The dramedy follows the four Johnson brothers, as they follow their destiny as Norse gods while searching for love, overcoming sibling rivalry — the youngest is Odin— and having a beer or two just like regular folk in the 21st century. The boyos are a bit of eye-candy— but it ain’t “Eureka.”
“Haven” is also scheduled to come back for a fifth season, but I fear it just might have ">jumped the shark and I don’t see it lasting much longer. After all, how many times can you come back before it gets really old?
Speaking of sharks, by the time this column comes out in print “Sharknado 2” on Syfy will have premiered. Following on the fins of “Sharknado,” this campy science-fiction movie was just the ticket to satisfy my Wednesday night option and need for camp.
Not for Nuthin™, but I wonder if the shark used a MetroCard or did he just jump the turnstile?
