Go, grimebusters
More than 60 volunteers with buckets, brooms, and pails donned purple T-shirts and cleaned up the trash on Church Avenue last month, turning an eyesore into a sight for sore eyes.
The Clean Up Church Avenue campaign of the Church Avenue Business Improvement District selected 12 sites for the spring cleaning, including the security gate of LA Chick Ladies Fashion and Gentleman’s Quarters Salon. After these two got the spit-and-polish routine, volunteers hit the streets with trash bags and a will to make it shine.
Officer Adams of the 70th Precinct Explorers Club brought her team of 11 teens and painted over the graffiti-riddled gates at C-Town, picked up garbage from the lawn of the medical center at E. 16th Street, and then hopped over to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, joining with other volunteers to collect the trash.
Another group led by Julie and Melyssa, Karen Massey (and her kids, Cameron and Caroline) were joined by Chris Kreussling of the Flatbush Gardener blog to clean the churchyard of the centuries-old Flatbush Reformed Church, as well as pick up trash from the native garden planted by Sustainable Flatbush.
All the volunteers were treated to a barbecue at the home of Nathan Thompson, with a fab dessert of cookies and cake to seal the deal.
The clean-up was co-sponsored by Councilmember Mathieu Eugene, HealthPlus Amerigroup, and Lowe’s, with additional support from Medina Silk Custom Screen Printing, Downtown Natural Market, Checkers, Mundo Supermarket, and 99 Cent City.
