This past week saw the end of two of my favorite television shows, “Psych” on the USA network, and “How I Met Your Mother,” on CBS.
I must admit that I didn’t become a fan of the horribly acronyned “HIMYM” until the fourth season, but through the magic of Netflix, I easily caught up with the first three seasons.
Since then, the gang of Ted, Lily, Barney, Robin, and Marshall, have become family, and I haven’t missed a week, because the series really hit so many notes with me. Everybnody has that group of friends that we met as children or young adults, with whom we share all our stories and remembrances whenever we see each other at our reunions, weddings, and, of course, funerals.
I don’t really have the attention span for serial sit-cinsm so I enjoyed the fact that each episode tied up nicely and there were very few cliff hanging moments, if any. Even this last season took the time to wrap everyone up, and I have to say I was happy to let them all go their merry way, feeling secure in their happily-every-after futures.
There was no fade-to-black and no dangling participles to leave you wondering “Will there be a reunion movie?”
I won’t get into details (just in case you were under a rock on Monday night and are waiting to check out your DVR to sit through it), but I will tell you to break out the box of Kleenix ’cause you’re going to need it. Not since the ending of “M*A*S*H” and the “Mary Tyler Moore” show have I cried this much.
“Psych” ended its long run after eight seasons, joining the other smart series from USA, “Monk” and “Fairly Legal.”
The series finale had Shawn and Gus solving their last crime. Shawn closes up the detective agency, moves north to San Francisco to be with Jules, who took a position with the Captain, who was transferred there and they live, presumably happily ever after. In good order and before the final shot is filmed, Gus shows up, giving up his dream job to partner with Shawn and start a new agency.
Oops, sorry for the spoiler, but you all have had a full weekend to check out your DVR’s so don’t complain.
USA has a knack for ending shows before they get the chance to get stale with endings that don’t have you feeling bad that the show is over.
Not for Nuthin, but now that these two shows have gone into syndication heaven, I’m sort of left in television limbo. I guess I’ll just have to fire up the Nook again and wait until another smart, funny, and enjoyable show comes along to fill the Monday and Wednesday void.
