Happy Labor Day!

We suspect you already have a game plan for soaking up every last bit of the summer you can before school starts (parties, trips to Coney Island, and a scrumptious barbecue quickly come to mind) but a Brooklyn Labor Day isn’t complete without experiencing the West Indian Day Parade.

Masqueraders in vibrant costumes, musicians, and dancers will turn Eastern Parkway and Utica Avenue into one gigantic party today starting at 11 am. This year’s grand marshals include the Jamaican-born Harry Belafonte and soca singer and Trinidad native Machel Montano in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s and Trinidad and Tobago’s independence.

For those looking to laugh their Labor Day away, one can attend the stand-up comedy open mic night at Freddy’s Bar in Greenwood Heights. VH1’s Pat O’Shea and Troy Bynum will be hosting the lineup of funny men and women daring enough to grace the stage and become fodder for hecklers.

But while you’re busy relaxing, we at Brooklyn Daily will be working hard providing you with insightful, thought-provoking, and entertaining coverage about the borough you love to call home.

Check back with us tomorrow to see what we have to keep you hustlin’, Brooklyn!
