Regular readers and all of my friends know that Carol and I are addicted to cruising. We just returned from cruise number 95. Number 96 is already booked. We spent two weeks aboard Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam (Yes. “Nieuw” is the way it is spelled).

This vessel had some of the best food and service I have ever received on a cruise. It also had some of the worst entertainment and activities. Most of the shows were not worth sitting through — and we didn’t. As for activities, Bible Study, cooking, sit & knit and a seminar on Chinese Medicine just didn’t cut it for me.

While aboard, I celebrated a milestone birthday. I turned 75 years old and yes, I know you don’t believe me. After so many years writing for this paper, you probably thought I was 90. After looking around at most of my shipmates I have come to the conclusion that, at 75, I am much too young to sail aboard this nursing-home at sea. Maybe in another 10 years and I’ll fit in.

My very favorite ship is Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas. There is so much going on all over this ship that it is almost impossible to see everything in one week. With that in mind, Carol and I sailed on the Allure twice. On this vessel passengers get to see a Broadway Show (“Chicago”), or sit in a comedy club, or watch a parade, or enjoy a zip line, or hit the ice-skating rink! There are also performances by professional ice dancers, Las Vegas-type revues, and the Boleros night club (that features some of the best Latin musicians you’ve ever heard), a wonderful jazz club, and plenty of games. The list of entertainment and activities goes on and on!

I even have heard people “complain” that they will not sail on the Allure because it’s too big!

“You cannot see it all on one cruise,” they tell me.

I am StanGershbein@Bellsouth.net saying that visitors to the Big Apple cannot see all the shows, sights, and museums in one visit either. Most visitors return several times, and pretty soon I expect Carol to suggest a third sailing on the Allure.

I want to close this week by saying goodbye to an old friend, long time Canarsie resident, Stella Zimmer. I met the Zimmer family in 1972 when I successfully ran for the Community School Board of District 18. Jack Zimmer was the perennial president and no doubt one of the most important people in the community. Several of us referred to him as the “Mayor of Canarsie.” Jack left us a few years ago but his First Lady remained in the same home until last week, when she took ill and left this earth to join him. Goodbye dear lady. I will miss our wonderful conversations and your friendship.
