A 29-year-old man facing charges of drug possession was found hanging by a T-shirt inside a 61st Precinct jail cell early in the morning of Aug. 30, and died six days later.
Cops locked the man in a detention cell at the Coney Island Avenue police house between Gravesend Neck Road and Avenue W shortly after his arrest at 4:19 am that day, but he didn’t stay there for long.
He was found hanging by his shirt at 6:45 am, and was rushed to Coney Island Hospital in critical condition.
The man lingered there for seven days before dying on Sept. 5.
Police are withholding the victim’s name pending family notification, and are not releasing the type or quantity of drugs cops allegedly found on him.
An officer within the precinct, who was not on hand for the grisly Friday-morning discovery, nevertheless said that a suicide is the last thing you want to find at the end of your shift.
“It’s obviously a very scary thing to find,” he said.
