Anthony Chavez scored the only run of the game off a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the sixth and John Gant threw a one-hit complete game to beat the Valley Cats and take sole possession of first place in the McNamara Division

In the middle of an intense pitching duel, Chavez led off the sixth with a single and quickly made it to second on a throwing error during a pickoff attempt. Eris Peguero singled on a bunt to move Chavez to third and Gavin Cecchini then grounded into a fielder’s choice to let Chavez score the lone run.

Gant pitched the first complete game of the year for the Cyclones, allowing just one hit in the sixth and one walk in the ninth, while striking out six in a stifling performance.

The Clones finally leapfrogged Aberdeen into first place in the division, after the IronBirds fell to the Lowell Spinners. Brooklyn now has a half game lead with seven games to go. That said, the Cyclones are still one game back in the loss column, with a 36–32 record. Aberdeen has a 34–31 record. In order to make the playoffs, the Cyclones must win the division. Simply put, second place is not enough.

The Cyclones return to MCU Park to take on the putrid, last-place Staten Island Yankees for the final two-game set for the cross-town rivals starting tonight.

Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU Park (Surf Avenue and W. 16th Street in Coney Island, www.brooklyncyclones.com) on Aug. 29 at 7 pm.
