NOT FOR NUTHIN’: Miley Cyrus’s achey breaky performance got me sick

I’m not one to watch the VMAs, and I can count the number of times on one finger that I have actually sat through a whole show. First, I’m not a big fan of the music, and second, I don’t even know who most of the performers are.

But since colleague Natalie Musumeci was going to the red carpet this year at the Barclays Center here in Brooklyn, I turned it on and watched, hoping to get a glimpse of Natalie interviewing the glamorous guests. But by the time it was over — heck, shortly after it started — I determined it will be a very cold day in hell before I ever sit through another one (unless, of course, our reporter is there, and even then it’s iffy at best).

It just ain’t me.

But the show certainly was eye-opening — and somewhat educational. I learned what “twerking” is, and that it has nothing to do with tweeting. Boy, am I sorry I even asked. For those uneducated in the art of twerking, I will explain. It is what Miley Cyrus did to Robin Thicke while he was singing “Blurred Lines.” I used to like that song, but thanks to twerking, tongue lolling out, crotch–grabbing Miley Cyrus, I will never be able to listen to it again without gagging at the memory.

I’m not a prude — really I’m not. But I just don’t get it. Why would anyone think crotch grabbing and suggestive moves is appropriate for an award show? And why do these ex-Disney stars think we want to see them do it? Just think of Britney Spears swapping spit with Madonna, way back in the bad old days.

Before you all get up and in my grill and start poo-pooing, just think about it. Do you really want your tweens to watch this poor excuse for entertainment? Or yourself, for that matter. I realize that Miley is trying to break out of her Disney mold, but this is not the way to do it.

Have a little respect for yourself. You can grow up, let your freak flag fly, and prove your independence and talent without one solid crotch-grabbing, twerking, spit-swapping moment.

Miley went way over the line of decency. Her performance was disgusting and totally inappropriate.

She even out-disgusted Lady GaGa, and that’s saying something since Lady GaGa is the queen of inappropriate actions.

What was even more disturbing was when the camera panned to Miley’s mom, and she was cheering her daughter on. Really, this is what a mother wants to see her daughter do? Sorry, not me.

Not for Nuthin,™ but next year, if Miley Cyrus is on the performers’s list, MTV should put out an advisory before the show begins: “Tonight’s Miley performance — not appropriate for anyone.”
