This is the greatest news ever. Medgar Evers graduate Delisha Bella is the first Medgar student in 10 years to move right into a doctoral program, straight after graduation. Our pal Delisha received a bachelor of science degree in environmental science with a minor in chemistry, and will travel way up north to State University at Albany’s School of Public Health come September. The PhD-to-be will be enrolled in the prestigious Environmental Health Sciences program there. But before hunkering down to a thesis and all that good stuff, Delisha will be spending the summer in Florida and studying with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The 3.6 GPA grad is also an on-campus leader, having served as a corresponding secretary for the Student Government Association, and currently serves as its vice president for evening and weekend students. Delisha plans on sharing her experiences with young people from the Caribbean — and encouraging them to consider careers in science and technology — after completing her PhD.
Delisha immigrated from Trinidad in 2000. She originally enrolled as an accounting major, but quickly found her passion after meeting Dr. Dereck Skeete, chairman of the Physical Environment and Computer Science department, and changed her major to science.
“Delisha is a very dedicated student and gives her all to whatever she works on,” said Dr. Skeete. “I’ve always been impressed with her passion for her work and the level of her commitment.”
Standing O is very impressed, too, and wishes Delisha good luck and a great future.
