“Greg, Greg, the consulate’s under attack!”

Mere words cannot describe the horror that surely metastasized like a tumor on speed for Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, as he informed mission official Gregory Hicks by phone that dozens of heavily armed militants had surrounded the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, and were launching a terror assault with rocket-propelled grenades, mortars, and AK-47 rifles.

“I think it’s the saddest phone call I’ve ever had in my life,” said Hicks — one of three whistle blowers testifying at a congressional hearing last week on the Oval Office’s oafish mismanagement of the blatant, unprovoked aggression — as he choked back tears, recalling how he felt upon learning the envoy was dead.

Nothing can bring back Ambassador Stevens, State Department employee Sean Smith, and former Navy Seals Glen A. Doherty, and Tyrone S. Woods, all of whom perished in the seven-hour siege that spread to a CIA annex on the 11th anniversary of 9-11 last year. But we can make sure their lives, service, and memories are not lost in vain by holding Obama’s big top of goofs and chicanery accountable for a job fatally flubbed.

Because a federal government’s first point of duty is to keep its civilians safe, and ours failed, royally.

It responded to Benghazi like a deer caught in headlights, callously boycotting a catastrophe that deserved the utmost attention and scrutiny.

Obama — clearly more interested in the upcoming presidential election than Americans in peril — erred fast and furiously. He abandoned ship at 5 pm on the day of the attacks and arose the next morning to attend a campaign fund-raiser in Las Vegas.

He led like a wuss at a time when his leadership was needed the most. Rescuers from the planet’s most powerful and influential country followed his lack of command and arrived on the scene more than two hours after the attacks began, finally departing Benghazi with the last survivors and Ambassador Stevens’s body at 10 am the next day.

Obama continued to botch big-time, mollifying Muslims at the expense of American lives and insisting the terror act spawned spontaneously from a protest to a U.S.-made, anti-Muslim video, even as Islamo-creeps proudly claimed responsibility.

In a flourishing footnote to his incompetence, Obama played warlord by attempting to muffle witnesses who saw the evil and bungling unfold.

Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen A. Doherty, and Tyrone S. Wood served their country laudably, but their country ignored them in their hour of need.

The blame for that disgrace falls squarely on Barack Obama, who did not deliver the “new spirit of patriotism, of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other” that he once touted so vaingloriously.

American lives are chopped liver to this president, who needs to step down or face impeachment. He is simply not up to the job, and Benghazi proves it.
