This plaudit goes out as freely as eggs over easy to Jacquernst Filias and Lovell Jones. The fifth graders from the Police Athletic League’s Brownsville Beacon Center scrambled the competition at the annual Tournament of Champions held in Queens. The fearless boys protected their eggs from breaking through various exercises designed to crack any shell. Other activities included Double Dutch Jump Rope, Connect Four, Noc Hockey, Math Challenge, Brain Quest, 3-on-3 Basketball, Fitness Challenge, Pool, and — Standing O’s personal favorite — Sorry.
The competition fostered understanding and relationships by bringing together boys and girls of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Champagne wishes to Frances Rose Avvento and Arron Rella on their engagement. The happy couple agreed to tie the knot with a sparkling ring and the good wishes of parents Camille and Frank Avvento, and Amelia and Gene Rella. The bride to be works as a vet tech at Pleasant Plains Animal Hospital on Staten Island, and the future groom is a pharmaceutical consultant for Acenture.

Kings and Masons
Three cheers to the Three Kings Districts of the Free and Accepted Masons. The fraternal order hosted its annual interfaith service at the Midwood Masonic Temple in Canarsie, and dedicated the service in memory of the late Rabbi Feldbin in recognition of his long years of exemplary service to the Masonry and the community. The order also bestowed its highest honor — the Rev. Norman Vincent Peale Memorial Masonic Award — to Wayne Northrup for his many volunteering efforts to help residents in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island recover after Hurricane Sandy.

A new ambassador in town
Bang the gavel for District Attorney Charles Hynes. The top lawman, or should we say “ambassador,” was honored by the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation on April 16 and presented the Atlantic Avenue Ambassador Award for his good works on behalf of Brooklyn.
The accolade recognizes the exceptional community contributions of individuals, and our pal DA Hynes certainly applies. He has launched many programs of great value to the local community, including the ComALERT (Community and Law Enforcement Resources Together) public safety program, which supports individuals on probation or parole as they re-enter society, and the Girls’ Re-Entry Assistance Support Project (GRASP), which helps initiate girls back into the community.

Sneakers off to John Quaglione, wife Kerry Izzo, and daughter Natalie. The intrepid trio, known as Team Natalie, marched in the March for Babies walk as part of the March of Dimes event on April 28 in Manhattan, raising more than $1,000 for the charity. In case you don’t know, John is the deputy chief of staff for state Sen. Marty Golden (R–Bay Ridge), and has tossed his hat into the ring, hoping to snare a victory in the City Council race for the 43rd District.
Standing O says, “Thank you” to Team Natalie, and wishes John good luck in his bid for higher office.
