Don’t drink and drive
Duffy Funeral Home would rather not have the business. This year the members of the mortuary sponsored an essay contest based on the documentary “Loaded Weapon and Drunk Driving,” which told the story of a young man who drove while drunk and killed a woman. The flick was aimed at keeping people alive and well, and the students jumped at the chance to spread the lesson. Out of the 200-plus budding Pulitzer winners, two were chosen: junior Olivia Boisrand and freshman Olivia Calamia. Principal Sister Valerias Belanger, SSND, was more than over the moon with the results.
“We are very proud of all our students, especially the two winners. We are also very happy to again work with the staff of Duffy Funeral Home. They have sponsored essay contests and provided our students with videos for the past 15 years that teach life’s lessons. These contests allow our students to express their opinions and reactions,” Sister Valerias told Standing O.

Rah, rah, rah! Sis-boom-bah!
Twisting, shouting, twirling, and sparkling, the Sparklers Baton Twirling Team wowed the crowds at MCU Park. After coming off a spectacular win at the New York Twirling Championship, the girls got to strut their stuff for family, friends, and spectators at the park. They even brought the Cyclones a stroke of good luck as the Boys of Summer won 7–6 against the hated Williamsport Crosscutters. The night’s performance featured a solo performance by coach Katie O’Hara, a twirl routine that included batons, ribbons, and hoops to the music of Katy Perry (You guessed it, the song was “Fireworks”). Students Tabitha Mehl, Nicole Balbi, Bianca Gonzalez, Isabella Silva, Thalia Santos, Yartizy Moran, Amaya Collado, Angelia Lubrano, Yaritzy Torres, Laila Gokbak, Abriel Santos, and Isis Rodriguez were chosen to perform based on their fabulous twirling abilities and achievements. Standing O says, “Twirl on girls!”
