The venerable Dance With Me Dance Center in Marine Park hosted a well-attended charity recital called “Hip Hop for Hope,” raising nearly $2,000 that will be donated to four different charities.
“The theme of our recital is Dance for a Cause,” said Allison Zaromatidis, who co-owns the dance studio with Elissa Shappero. “We’re trying to show our youth what it is to give back.”
The philanthropic institutions Autism Speaks, the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital’s Kids for Kids foundation, and the Teal Foundation all received equal shares of the event’s proceeds. The Teal Foundation was founded by the late Louisa McGregor, whose daughter Ashley attends the studio.
“We picked four foundations that are near and dear to us,” said Zaromatidis. “We couldn’t choose just one.”
During the recital, company dancers performed their take on classic hip hop tunes, before Mr. Kid of NJD Entertainment led the kids in their own series of dances. They even managed to sneak in a little limbo before the night was out.
“It went on for two hours, so there were a lot of dances,” said Zaromatidis. “It was two hours of giving to a good cause.”
