If he designs it, he’ll win

Four cheers and a big huzza to Sam Nakagawa. The Poly Prep senior generated four wins for his innovative wind turbine design. The research competition sponsored by the New York City Department of Education and the City University of New York is the largest in the entire city. Hundreds of students from all over the boroughs participated, but Standing O pal Sam, from our very own little burgh, trounced his fellow researchers and took home four wins, including:

• Second place for outstanding projects based on overall performance, in which he received a silver medal and certificate.

• The Frank W. and Jane J. Stahl Memorial Award for Technical Excellence, which provided 100 buckaroos in prize money.

• The National Society of Professional Engineers and Professional Engineers in Industry Innovative Engineering Award for his outstanding project, which added $1,000 to Sam’s till, along with a certificate and a lapel pin.

And finally —

• The United States Air Force Outstanding Engineering Fair Project award for outstanding projects in math, science, and engineering, which added one more certificate to the pile.

Standing O wanted to know why Sam was so electric over this type of research, “I wanted to focus on renewable energy,” he said.

He added, “I consider myself a creative person. And I’ve been building robots to electronics since I was a child.”

Although this uber-wunderkind engineer hasn’t chosen a college yet, he is considering Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

Standing O is hoping he sticks with his home state. After all, New York needs all the help it can get when it comes to renewable energy. But we love the steak sauce from Worcester.
