Three gold stars and a shout-out to Standing O pal Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz (D-Sheepshead Bay) for reading to tiny tots in celebration of National Read Across America Day — did you expect anything else? Preschoolers at the Sunny Skies Preschool were treated to a rousing read of “The Night Kitchen” by borough scribe Maurice Sendak — also of “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Little Bear” fame — at the Homecrest Library last month.
Wee ones listened intently, with eyes wide and curious, as the official relayed the delightful tale of a boy named Mickey who journeys through a dream baker’s kitchen, where he assists in making a cake.
The assemblyman, long a friend and advocate of public libraries and a sponsor of the annual Summer Reading Challenge, had the tots reading right out of his hand!
“The joy of reading is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children,” he shared with Standing O. “Events like this one are important for showcasing the many wonderful things our libraries offer, and the worlds that magically open up when children become enthusiastic about books.”
