The Clones rebounded from a horrible performance Thursday night to deal the Connecticut Tigers a shutout loss in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Brooklyn center fielder Brandon Nimmo extended his hitting streak to six games with a leadoff double in the first, then touched the plate on an RBI liner from designated hitter Kevin Plawecki. Left fielder Stefan Sabol sent Plawecki home with a two-run dinger over the left field fence, and that was all the Clones needed — thanks to great pitching from Luis Cessa, who limited Connecticut to just two hits, no walks, and no runs in his five inning on the mound.
The Cyclones loaded the bases twice in the game, but failed to produce another run. In the fifth frame shortstop Philip Evans and first baseman Jayce Boyd hit back-to-back singles off Tigers hurler Jack Duffey, while Plawecki drew a walk with no outs. But catcher Bennett Pickar managed to pick Evans off at third, while Duffey fanned Sabol and Coney catcher Jeff Glenn grounded out.
In the seventh, Nimmo and Evans hit back-to-back singles off reliever Angel Nesbitt, who then walked Boyd — again with none away. But Tigers first baseman Edgar Corcino caught a pop-foul off the bat of Plawecki, and Sabol grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Brooklyn reliever Matthew Bowman sent the Tigers down in order three innings in a row, and closer John Mincone pitched a 1–2–3 ninth to end the game. The Clones — who are two games back from the Hudson Valley Renegades in the McNamara Division— now begin a three-game home stand against the surging Auburn Doubledays, who lead the Pinckney Division. It may wind up being a difficult series, but the pride of Coney Island will have some help in the form of Mets ace Johan Santana, who is scheduled to scheduled to start for Brooklyn on Sunday as he comes off the disabled list.
The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] on tonight at 6 pm as they take on the Auburn Doubledays.
