A stunning showing by Clones hurler Gabriel Ynoa and a one-run dinger by first baseman Jayce Boyd let the Cyclones squeak past the Lowell Spinners in the first of three games in Massachusetts.
Ynoa was dominant on the mound, blanking the Spinners over seven innings and racking up eight strikeouts while giving up just four hits and no walks. Reliever Paul Sewald finished the job by tossing back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth, striking out three Spinners of his own and picking up his third save of the season.
The first three frames were a tense pitching duel as Ynoa and Lowell starter William Cuevas duked it out — with both teams eking out just one hit. But in the top of the fourth, Boyd crushed a fly ball over the left field fence for a solo homer, giving the Mini-Mets a lead they held onto for the rest of the game. Cuevas loaded the bases the same inning by surrendering singles to left fielder Stefan Sabol and right fielder Julio Concepcion and walking catcher Nelfi Zapata with two outs on the board. But third baseman Jeff Reynolds popped out to first to end the inning, and Cuevas recovered his control in the following two frames.
Spinners skipper Bruce Crabbe replaced Cuevas with hurler Gregory Larson in the seventh. Larson held the Cyclones scoreless the rest of the game despite giving up three hits in the ninth.
The Clones are now on a five-game winning streak. Unfortunately, the Hudson Valley Renegades are on a four game tear, defeating the Vermont Lake Monsters last night to leave the Cyclones two games behind them in the race for McNamara division championship. Meanwhile, Brooklyn’s reviled cross-harbor nemeses the State Island Yankees fell to the Connecticut Tigers last night, leaving them in last place in the NY-Penn League.
The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] on Aug. 10 at 7 pm as they take on the Vermont Lake Monsters.
