Who said you can’t have the Iditarod on the beach?

Brooklyn Cub and Boy Scouts competed in the annual Klondike Derby at the Coney Island Boardwalk on Saturday, where the aspiring survivalists competed to see who could tie the tightest knots, and pull the fastest sled.

“It’s traditionally a winter event, so you’re supposed to imagine you’re in Alaska, and these are all survival or memory skills,” explained Kent Woo, the Klondike Derby Event Chairman.

The Cub Scouts had their very own challenges to compete, including a heroic harpoon throw and a waddling race called the penguin relay.

Naturally, there were no losers for the younger contestants.

“It’s mostly for fun for the Cub Scouts,” said Woo.

The real action was reserved for the older Boy Scouts, who competed in a series of knot tying and tent pitching events, which culminated in the Iditarod of scout competitions — the sled race.

“The all time greatest challenge is the sled race, that puts you on the top if you win,” said Woo. “If you score first, second, or third, you’re a medal contender.”

Everyone who competed received a coveted Boy Scout badge, a trophy, and the admiration of their scout masters.

“The kids did great,” Woo confirmed.
