Cyclones 6
Vermont Lake Monsters 3

Aug. 11 at MCU Park

Brooklyn center fielder Brandon Nimmo made his triumphant return to the Cyclones line-up and helped pummel the Vermont Lake Monsters in the second night of a three-game series in Coney Island.

Things got off to a bad start for the Lake Monsters as starter Michael Ynoa surrendered a leadoff walk to Nimmo — who went two-for-four in his first game back since getting plunked in the shoulder against the Auburn Doubledays on Aug. 6. Nimmo advanced to third on a single by shortstop Philip Evans, then scored on a balk. First baseman Jayce Boyd lined out, but designated hitter Kevin Plawecki slapped a grounder out to left that brought Evans home.

The Clones tacked two more runs on the board in the fourth frame, as right fielder Eudy Pina roped one to left field with two away for a single. With Nimmo at bat, Pina stole second — his team-leading eighth stolen base of the season — then scored on an RBI liner from the Coney center fielder. A single from Evans sent Nimmo around the bases.

The Lake Monsters tried to answer in the fifth with an RBI double from center fielder Austin Booker, but in the bottom of the inning Plawecki crushed a solo shot to left to pad the Clones’ lead. Vermont attempted to rally again in the next inning but fell short, as designated hitter Addison Russell hit a liner to center off Brooklyn reliever Matt Koch to drive in Vermont shortstop Wilfredo Solano and first baseman Jacob Tanis — leaving them two runs behind the Clones.

A dinger from Pina sealed the Cyclones win as the Lake Monsters failed to produce another run the last three frames.

The Clones have crept within two games of the first-place Hudson Valley Renegades in the McNamara Division of the NY-Penn League, and continue to lead the Wild Card race by five games over the State College Spikes.

The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] tonight at 5 pm as they take on the Vermont Lake Monsters.
