Reading is fundamental — and fund-raising is instrumental!

The Brooklyn Public Library’s annual fund-raiser, which was held at the Wythe Hotel and the Brooklyn Bowl and featured a live show by Afrobeat band Antibalas, raised $440,000 this year.

More than 400 donors showed up to spend their money on a live auction, tickets, sponsorships and donations.

“People understand that we need the private donations to do the programming we do,” said Lexy Mayers, chief development officer. “This money is going to help us restore the branches that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy.”

The library offered some interesting auction packages, which included items such as a private home reading by “Extremely Loud” author Jonathan Safran Foer, a first pitch throw at a Brooklyn Cyclones game and dinner for ten at Battersby.

The event, which is the library’s biggest fund-raiser of the year, raised more than in 2012, when it netted $430,000.
