Middle school scholars competed at the Bay Academy’s district-level spelling bee on Jan. 28, with nine E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T students spelling their way to the city-wide championship.

“These students work so hard and one little word can throw them out,” said Bay Academy assistant principal Janice Dalton. “They’re very smart.”

The contest drew by 51 students, representing 22 schools from across the borough.

In the end, however, it all came down to the infallible Jerry Wang from PS 229, and the scrupulous Adrian Kloskowski representing IS 239.

Both students put on a fierce display of scholastic knowledge, but there can only be one — this time, it was Mr. Wang.

Now both formidable opponents, along with the seven runner-ups, will move on to the city finals together, where they will compete for glory and, even better, cold, hard cash.

“I have to tell you, there’s a lot of camaraderie amongst the kids,” said Dalton. “They’re just so happy to make it there, and they study so hard. They’re just proud to represent their school.”
